HEY SCHOLARS!!!
YAY!!!!!!!!!! Only one more week until Winter Break. For this week, we are discussing redox reactions. These happen in everyday life especially within the industrial field. For this week's challenge, find me a redox reaction and explain what is happening.
Happy Holidays!

Alternative Blog for Week of Dec 8-12th: Thermochemistry
Scholars,
Due to lack of findings on the previous blog for this week, I've decided to put an alternative challenge out there for you. You need to go out there online and find a thermochemistry problem like the ones we've been solving in class (calorimetry, heat of rxn, specific heat, etc) post it and solve it. Happy Last Week Before Break!!!

Week of Dec. 8-12th Discussion:
Scholars,
I was having a discussion with a fellow scholar this week on how what tool/instrument measures some of the hottest things in the world, like Lava for example. This week do some research and find an article or website that would lead me to my answer.

Week Dec. 1st-7th : The Turkey Sleep
Hey Scholars,
Well I don't know about you but I had a wonderful Thanksgiving and I hope you all did too. But... I was aweful tired after eating all of that food. It has been a rumor that tryptophan is the culprit of my tiredness. For this weeks post tell me what kind of chemical is tryptophan and an article proving or disproving the rumor. Have a great Week

Week 12 Discussion: Energy Drinks Cont'd
Hey Scholars!!!
Can you believe it? We are already at the end of the 2nd six weeks. Only 6 more weeks and your done with Chemistry (tear). Last week we talked about electrolytes and that kind of lead to some discussion on energy drinks. For this week I would like you to read this article/story and tell me if this is going to be the future of sports drinks. Instead of Gator-aid are athletes going to slam an energy drink before a game or an Olympic Race?

Let me know what you think

Week 11 Discussion: "Naturally We Called Our Stuff Gator-Aid"
Hey Scholars,
Hope you enjoy that extra day off this week. I know I did. This week we are talking about Colloids and things that are suspended in solutions. My first thought when I think of electrolytes is Gator-Aid. I want to know what other beverages are out there that have suspended matter in them and what makes the healthy or unhealthy for our bodies (effects) Hint: energy drinks!!!

Week 10 Discussion- Changes in State
Hey Scholars!!!
This week is one of our easiest topics we will be covering in Chemistry: The changes in states of matter. For this weeks post try and find a substance with either then lowest melting point or the highest boiling point. The most extreme on each will win a prize. (remind me)
Happy Hunting

Week 9 Discussion: Gases... Who Farted? J/K
Hey Scholars!!!,
Happy Spirit Week. I hope you are excited about this weeks festivities. This week we are discussing gases and the laws that come with them. Last week Miss. Brewer had a great mole day joke. So... that gave me a great idea about this weeks post. You must find or some up with a joke about gases and post it. Rememeber it must be school appropriate. GO VIKES!!!

Week 8 Discussion- What is this Math in Chemistry? Stoichiometry
Hey Scholars,
Here is your help on the difficult test I give. I realize it is easy to get frustrated in this class but keep your head up and keep working hard. For this weeks blog we are talking about Stoichiometry. I want to know a little history about this subject as well as this word we call the Mole (Mol). For this week add a historical fact about stoichiometry or give me the date of National Mol Day and things people do to celebrate this date. Have a great week

Week 7 Discussion: Products... Nope not the kind you buy at the store
Hey Scholars!!!
I hope you all enjoyed your lovely 3 day weekend. I just realized that I only see you all 3 days this week and a small tear came from my eye ... but I quickly wiped it away.. haha I realize that this weeks post is eerily similar to last weeks but i figure you could use the easy EC points seeing as we have a test coming up on friday. So here it is: Chose a daily or applicable to daily life reaction (just the reactants) and predict the products and tell what type of reaction it would be: (composition, decomposition, single replacement, double replacement, or combustion)
Cheers

Week 6 Find the Balance
Hey Scholars!!
Well the 1st six weeks is almost over and its time to jump right into the 2nd six weeks. I hope chemistry has been enjoyable and exciting so far.
This week we are balancing and writing chemical equations. For your mission this week write out and balance a common chemical reaction that happens during our daily activities (ex: pop (for the southerners SODA) fizzing.) Have a great work and finish this six weeks strong.

Week 5 Discussion What's in a NAME?
Welcome Scholars to week 5 ..... boy these weeks are sure flyin by.
For this weeks post... like I said in class....
See if you can find the longest chemical compound name.... largest gets a prize..(remind me)
Have a great week... Study hard for that test on Fri. (chap. 7)

Week #4 Discussion STABLE MOLECULES!!!
Hey Scholars!!!
It's your friendly neighborhood Chemistry Teacher, Mr. D
For this weeks post I would like to write the formula for a "stable" molecule (ANY STABLE MOLECULE) and explain why it is stable according to the Lewis Dot Structure and VSPER theory. If your not strong in this part of Chem. feel free to do research online to help guide you to the answer.
Yours during 2nd Period

Week 3 Discussion- The Elements
HEY HEY SCHOLARS!
This week we will be discussing the periodic table more in-depth. Your task for this week is to find one interesting thing that is made out of an element on the periodic table or has the element in it.
EX: FACOTID: finger and toe nails have a small amount of GOLD in them
The most interesting Factoid will recieve a prize on Monday
Happy Blogging

Week 2 Discussion: Development of Atomic Theory
Hey Scholars!!!,
Thanks to all who posted their comments last week. Those were some interesting articles. This week we are studying Atomic Theory from past to present. My challenge to you this week is to find an "interesting factoid" on one of the scientists involved with the formation of Atomic Theory. These "interesting factoids" can be about the scientists personal life, etc. The person with the most interesting fact will receive a prize on Monday Sept. 8th, 2008.
Get your FACTOID on....

Observations and Scientific Method
Scholars,
As we move through the protocol for scientific method this week, we realize how important it is to study other scientific research before conducting our own. For this weeks online assignment I would like you to find a Chemistry article (periodical) (of your choice of topic) online, make sure the link to the article is in your post and discuss/sumarize the research you found.
(ABSTRACTS ARE OK but full text is preferred)
Here is a hint: go to google, at the top of the page click more... then click scholar then all you have to do is type in the topic of your choice.

WELCOME SCHOLARS!!!
Welcome to Mr. D's online classroom. Above is a virtual calender of our class activities and due dates for you to check if you forget to write it down in class. Throughout the semester there will be topics for you to discuss (comment or question) weekly. You will be required to post your comments or questions at least once a week for a homework grade. All comments should pertain to the topic presensted by myself. Any inappropriate comments or questions will face steep consequences. This will be a fun and exciting way of utilizing technology to further our education about Chemistry topics. I look forward to reviewing all of your comments/questions on our first topic very soon.Mr. D
